20 Questions Game for Couples

Start with five questions here, then keep playing in TalkCards. Take turns answering on one phone, stay curious, and let one good answer interrupt the game.

Ready? Put the phone between you and answer the same question before moving on.

How to play

Take turns

One person reads the card. Both answer it before tapping next.

Follow the interesting bit

A follow-up conversation matters more than reaching question 20.

Make passing easy

Either person can skip a question without explaining why.

Five questions to start with

These five prompts are the free sample on this page. Take your time with each one; the follow-up is usually more valuable than the next question.

  1. What small thing made you smile this week?
  2. What would our ideal completely unplanned day look like?
  3. Which ordinary moment together would you happily repeat?
  4. What is something you have changed your mind about recently?
  5. What tiny tradition should we start for ourselves?

What makes a good couples question?

The best prompts are open-ended, easy to understand, and natural to say aloud. They invite a story rather than a yes-or-no answer, and they become more personal gradually so neither person feels ambushed.

When to play

Try this on a date night, during a quiet evening at home, on a road trip, or during a long-distance call. It also works when you like each other very much but keep falling back into the same daily questions.

How deep should the questions go?

A comfortable progression is light, then personal, relationship, future, and only then deeper topics. A pass is always allowed. Date Night, Deep Talks, and Tough Talks each take a different route through that progression.

20 questions or a conversation card game?

A static list gives you prompts. A designed card game also handles pacing, progression, one-card-at-a-time play, and different moods, so you spend less time choosing what to ask and more time following the answer.

Start with five, then keep playing

Getting Closer is the deck most couples open first — 103 questions, one card at a time, on the phone you are already holding. It is part of TalkCards Premium.

Common questions

Can we play on one phone?

Yes. The game is designed to be passed back and forth.

Is the game free?

These five sample questions are free and need no account. The TalkCards decks themselves — all nine of them — are part of Premium.

Do we have to finish all five?

No. Three questions explored properly can make a better evening than rushing through five. When you want more structure, continue into the Getting Closer deck.
